According to Aetha Consulting, such traffic drives twice as much uplink data as ordinary mobile use – and total network load could grow by as much as 10x current levels in the near future. Nokia’s solution is to deploy next-generation baseband and radio hardware specifically designed to handle AI-driven traffic.

The partnership also highlights the economic challenges of adapting to an AI-driven world. As networks become increasingly seen as critical infrastructure, companies like Nokia must innovate to avoid being left behind. Management expects its AI-RAN platform to reach 50% higher spectral efficiency next year and 100% by 2028, with the 6G equipment market projected to exceed $50 billion by the first half of the 2030s.

Nokia’s willingness to collaborate is also noteworthy. The partnership with Nvidia Corporation on GPU-powered base stations is significant given the latter’s expertise in AI computing. Dell Technologies’ involvement in supplying PowerEdge servers for the computing backbone adds another layer of complexity to the deal.
